Happy 100th Birthday Estelle, Golden Girl Cheesecake by George Geary

Estelle Getty

July 25th, 1923

She was the 4th Golden Girl from the multi-Emmy award-winning show from the 1980s. Estelle was known as the eldest “girl” on the show, thou she was really the youngest. Many hours of the makeup chair to age her for the Friday night taping. Originally in the pilot, she was only going to be a recurring character, she was a hit with the audience, so Estelle was written into the show as a permanent cast member.

Before the Golden Girls, Estelle was a theatrical actress. Her career blossomed later in her life with the role of Sophia Petrillo. Estelle was one of the first actresses in Hollywood to advocate during the start of the AIDS epidemic when the government would not speak the words. Her nephew Steven Bruce Scher passed away at the young age of 29, and many of her fellow actors succumbed to the horrible disease. In his honor, Estelle helped open a hospice in Steven’s hometown in South Carolina. To this day, is is still helping people.

Estelle’s final resting place is in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, July 25th of this year would have been her 100th birthday.

Many would agree that the 5th character on the show was a cheesecake. Many evenings and sometimes in the middle of the night, the girls would tackle the days’ problems or celebrate while eating a cheesecake. I have posted this before, and here it is again, one of the recipes for the cheesecakes from the show. Besides the dessert, I also created several wedding cakes, sandwiches, pasta sauces, and various foods cooked in the kitchen. Have a slice for Estella’s Birthday!

Retro Raspberry Butter Cookies by George Geary

Lately I have been looking at 1960s Food magazines and recipe for cookies. Life was simple and the cookies were part of Americana. I update the recipes to include butter instead of “oleo”. I also added vanilla extract for added flavor. Here are Raspberry Butter Cookies adapted from a 1959 Woman’s Day Magazine. I hope you enjoy!

I love a challenge! Could I put together a Valentine’s dinner for two, Wine, Main, Sides and dessert for under $25. Also, it has to be worthy of a date and anyone could make without too many cooking skills. Plus I have to do it on camera in 4-5 minutes. I few of the items are purchased but “Doctored” up. If someone made this meal for you I am sure you would be in love!

LAs Landmark Restaurants ~ Celebrating the Legendary Locations Where Angelenos Have Dined for Generations by George Geary

Whew! After delays, I finally have in my hands my 15th book! LAs Landmark Restaurants. You can order it below the picture, and I will personalize it!

2018, LA’s Legendary Restaurant book was released, 60 restaurants with about 120 recipes. This book was initially called LA’s Golden Era Restaurants, focusing on places stars hung out in the 30s and 40s, most gone. Pictures were difficult to come by, and stories were boring or had hardly any information on them; I then opened the book's scope to include additional locations, but some were still open. You can still purchase one with the link below.

My newest book is not a “Part 2” per se, but a continuation of Restaurants of LA, another 60 locations, I focus more on the families that started them) and are still mainly in business. And Yes, I include recipes! Enjoy!

New Station New Show! WTF (What The Food Day) August 10th Nat'l S'More Day by George Geary

WTF Day! National S’More Day on FOX5 San Diego! Using See’s Candies!

Today I changed channels from CBS8 to FOX5. The kitchen and studio was different in the least. I used to be on the CW in San Diego for years until the station was sold. I had a rolling kitchen, and also one outside for grilling and warm weather. At CBS8, I made my own kitchen with tables and hot plates. Today, the kitchen is in the middle of the newsroom (See pictures below) and it also is the kitchen all of the staff and crew use. Great meeting everyone and so many talked about the aromas coming from the kitchen! Here are all of the recipes for you to they. All have three ingredients! And I used See’s Candies in a few of them.

Van De Kamps Maple Pecan Cookies by George Geary

Oh the rich pecan maple flavor will get you hooked and take you back to 1956 at Van De Kamps Bakery. This recipe is from the original formula created into a recipe that you can make at home. I convert, test, and retest to make sure the cookie is as best as perfect as possible. If you would like the same results, use a scale and weigh in grams, use the ingredients and tools that I use and you will have great success. I even provide links to the “strange” tools and ingredients you may not have in your pantry. Good luck and Post a picture in the Van De Kamps Facebook Page! VDK Facebook Page Link
